What Catholics must believe about Mary is contained in public revelation and the Church’s dogmas: that she is the Mother of God, ever virgin, immaculately conceived and assumed into heaven. Private revelations exist to help people live that faith more fully in a particular time, never to add to it. The Holy See’s 2024 norms on alleged supernatural phenomena confirm that the faithful are not obliged to give an assent of faith.
Respect is still fitting. In the same passage Benedict XVI says that a private revelation approved by the Church can be a real help in understanding and living the Gospel at a given time and is not to be treated lightly. Medjugorje is a separate case: the Holy See's 2024 note permits public devotion there without declaring the reported apparitions supernatural.
