I’m interested in Seoul

World Youth Day 2027 will be held in Seoul, South Korea, from August 3 to 8, 2027. Its theme is “Take courage! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). It is the worldwide gathering of young Catholics with the Pope, and the first ever held in Korea.

Bold Pilgrim has not announced a World Youth Day departure. No dates of travel, price, lodging, priest or package from us is confirmed. You can register your interest below and we will write to you when there is something real to tell you.

What World Youth Day is

World Youth Day is the Catholic Church’s international gathering of young people with the Pope. St. John Paul II instituted it at the end of 1985. It was first celebrated in dioceses in 1986, and the first international gathering was held in Buenos Aires in 1987.

Since then the Church has kept it every year locally and, every two to three years, in one host city with the Pope. The most recent was Lisbon in August 2023. The Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life prepares each one with a local committee, which for 2027 is led by the Archbishop of Seoul.

Why Seoul 2027 matters

Pope Francis announced it at the close of Lisbon, on August 6, 2023: “The next World Youth Day will take place in Asia: in South Korea, in Seoul in 2027!” Pope Leo XIV gave the dates on August 3, 2025, at the Jubilee of Youth in Rome, telling young people, “I look forward to seeing you in Seoul.”

It will be the first World Youth Day in Korea and only the second in Asia, after Manila in 1995. It will also be held in a country where Christians are a minority, and where the Church began in an unusual way: through lay people, before any missionary arrived.

Dates and theme

The week in Seoul runs from Tuesday, August 3, to Sunday, August 8, 2027.

The Korean dioceses outside Seoul hold a separate programme beforehand, the Days in the Dioceses, from July 29 to August 2, with its own registration. It is run by the Korean Church, and it is not part of anything Bold Pilgrim is planning for Seoul.

The theme, chosen by Pope Francis and presented at the Holy See Press Office on September 24, 2024, is “Take courage! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).

What pilgrims can expect

Two things are worth keeping apart: what the organizers have said about Seoul, and what a World Youth Day usually holds.

What has been said about Seoul

  • The organizers’ outline gives an opening Mass with the Archbishop of Seoul on Tuesday, August 3; catechesis with bishops from Wednesday to Friday; a youth festival through Friday; the welcome ceremony with the Pope on Thursday afternoon, August 5; the Way of the Cross on Friday, August 6; the vigil on Saturday, August 7; and the closing Mass on Sunday, August 8. Hours have not been published.
  • The organizers say Pope Leo XIV is scheduled to attend. The Holy See has not yet published a programme for the papal visit.
  • No venue has been announced. The organizers say venues are still being finalized, so treat any venue or hour as provisional until they confirm it.
  • The organizers have named the patrons of the gathering: St. John Paul II, St. Andrew Kim Taegon and his companion martyrs, St. Frances Xavier Cabrini, St. Josephine Bakhita and St. Carlo Acutis.

What a World Youth Day usually holds

  • An opening Mass with the local bishop; the Pope is not usually present for it.
  • Mornings of catechesis with bishops, with Mass.
  • A youth festival of music, prayer and culture across the city.
  • Confession, offered widely through the week, and time for prayer and adoration.
  • A welcome for the Pope, then the Way of the Cross.
  • On the last night a walk to the vigil site and a vigil with the Pope, often kept overnight outdoors, and on Sunday the closing Mass, where the next host is traditionally announced.

This pattern comes from the United States bishops’ description of past World Youth Days. It describes what is customary. For Seoul itself, the organizers have published only the dated outline above.

The Church in Korea and its martyrs

The Church in Korea was, in St. John Paul II’s words, “founded entirely by lay people.” It began after a Korean was baptized in Beijing in 1784 and brought the faith home. Waves of persecution followed.

On May 6, 1984, in Seoul, John Paul II canonized 103 Korean martyrs, among them St. Andrew Kim Taegon, the first Korean priest, and the lay leader St. Paul Chong Hasang. The Church keeps their memorial on September 20. On August 16, 2014, also in Seoul, Pope Francis beatified Paul Yun Ji-chung and 123 companions.

Seoul’s Catholic pilgrimage routes, which take in the martyrs’ shrines of the city, were recognized by the Holy See as an international pilgrimage site in September 2018. A statue of St. Andrew Kim Taegon has stood in a niche on the outside of St. Peter’s Basilica since September 2023.

Traveling to South Korea

Passport and visa
U.S. citizens do not need a visa for a tourist stay of up to 90 days. The U.S. bishops advise a passport valid for at least three months beyond your return; the World Youth Day organizers ask for at least six months.
K-ETA
The exemption from Korea’s electronic travel authorization for U.S. passport holders runs through December 31, 2026. The State Department says a K-ETA will be required from January 1, 2027, so as things stand American pilgrims in August 2027 should expect to need one.
Travel advisory
The State Department lists South Korea at Level 1, Exercise Normal Precautions.
Weather
August is Korea’s warmest month and very humid. It falls in the summer monsoon season, with heavy rain possible, and within the typhoon season.

Entry rules change. These were read on October 9, 2026; check the U.S. State Department and the Korean government again before you book.

Pilgrim Pace: what the week asks of you

World Youth Day is physically demanding in a way most pilgrimages are not. Expect long days on foot in heat and humidity, large crowds, and waiting. The U.S. bishops’ guide for past World Youth Days told pilgrims to expect to walk five to ten miles a day.

The vigil is traditionally kept outdoors overnight, on the ground, after a long walk to the site. Anyone with a health condition, limited mobility or a low tolerance for heat should think carefully and speak with a doctor. Bold Pilgrim would rate a World Youth Day at the demanding end of Pilgrim Pace.

How Pilgrim Pace works

Preparing

The organizers’ list for Seoul is sunscreen, rain gear, a light jacket for air-conditioned buildings, toiletries, a sleeping bag, insect repellent, a 220V travel adapter, basic medications, modest clothing for Mass and church visits, and a passport with at least six months’ validity. The U.S. bishops’ general advice for World Youth Day is to pack as lightly as you can, with sturdy shoes already broken in.

Their advice to leaders is worth more than the list: prepare young people spiritually, not only practically. A group that has prayed together before it leaves will arrive as pilgrims.
