An International Eucharistic Congress is a gathering of Catholics from around the world, held every few years in a different city, for Mass, adoration, teaching and a public Eucharistic procession. It is a large event with a program of liturgies and talks, which makes it a different kind of journey from a week of prayer at a single shrine.

American readers sometimes confuse it with the National Eucharistic Congress. That was a United States event, held in Indianapolis in July 2024 at the end of the first National Eucharistic Pilgrimage. The international congress is convened for the whole Church, and the 2028 host was announced in Quito by the Pope's legate, Cardinal Baltazar Porras.

Preparation in Australia is already under way. Catholic press reported in January 2026 that the Archdiocese of Sydney, under Archbishop Anthony Fisher, was opening a Year of Prayer with a nationwide Holy Hour on March 1, 2026, and that Bishop Richard Umbers is general secretary of Eucharist28. Good to know before you plan: Sydney is a long-haul journey from the United States, and until the organizers publish the dates there is nothing to book. Wait for the official program before committing to flights or rooms.
