The precision matters because the wider title circulates widely, including in some Vatican media reports. The Latin text of Pius XI's letter names him "caelestis Patronus omnium parochorum seu animarum curatorum." John XXIII's 1959 encyclical on the Curé of Ars recalls that St. Pius X "had previously committed all of the shepherds of souls in France" to his patronage, and Benedict XVI's 2009 letter proclaiming the Year for Priests calls him "the patron saint of parish priests worldwide."

Benedict's homily closing the Year for Priests in June 2010 calls him "the model of priestly ministry in our world" and contains no new proclamation. Leo XIV, in his Apostolic Letter of December 2025, still wrote of the "Patron Saint of parish priests and model for all priests."

Other saints hold related patronages: Pius XII named St. John of Ávila patron of the diocesan clergy of Spain in 1946. The Church also keeps the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart as the World Day of Prayer for the Sanctification of Priests, instituted by St. John Paul II in 1995.

Pilgrims can pray at St. John Vianney's shrine in Ars-sur-Formans, north of Lyon, where he was parish priest for forty-one years.
