The leader may be a priest or a layperson; the two roles are different and one does not replace the other. Arrangements vary by operator, so ask for the division of responsibilities in writing before promoting a trip: who collects money, who answers travelers’ questions, who arranges Masses, and whether the leader receives anything in return.
Parish & private groups · YOUR QUESTION, ANSWERED
What does a pilgrimage group leader do?
A pilgrimage group leader gathers the people and keeps them together; the leader does not run the travel logistics or the liturgy. Typically the leader chooses the destination and season with the tour operator, invites people, answers their first questions, and is the group’s point of contact before and during the journey. The operator handles flights, hotels, transport, guides, and payments. A priest, when one travels with the group, celebrates Mass and hears confessions.
