Is Antoni Gaudí a saint?

Not yet. Antoni Gaudí, the architect of the Sagrada Família in Barcelona, was declared Venerable on 14 April 2025, when Pope Francis authorized the decree recognizing that he lived the Christian virtues to a heroic degree. As of 8 October 2026 he has not been beatified or canonized. Beatification would need a miracle attributed to his intercession and approved by the Church. He was struck by a tram on 7 June 1926, died three days later, and is buried in the crypt of the basilica.

Benedict XVI, who dedicated the Sagrada Família on 7 November 2010, called Gaudí 'a creative architect and a practising Christian' who drew on three books: nature, sacred Scripture and the liturgy.

On 10 June 2026, the centenary of his death, Pope Leo XIV prayed at his tomb, celebrated Mass in the basilica and blessed its central Tower of Jesus Christ.

In mid-2026 the vice-postulator of his cause said that a possible miracle was being studied in Rome; no decree and no date of beatification had been announced when this answer was last checked. Because a cause can advance at short notice, check the Archdiocese of Barcelona or the Holy See for his current title before repeating it.
