The cathedral says the weekday closure stays in effect until further notice, and the Father Kapaun Guild expected the dome work to take one to two years from Memorial Day 2025, so confirm the current position before you travel. Private visits need no reservation; a party of more than ten counts as a group and should send the cathedral's group request. If Mass is being celebrated, wait until it has ended before going to the tomb. Weekend Masses are on Saturday in the early evening in Spanish and on Sunday in the morning, with an additional Spanish Mass around midday.

Fr. Kapaun was born in Pilsen, Kansas, in 1916, ordained for the Diocese of Wichita in 1940, and served as a U.S. Army chaplain in the Second World War and in Korea. Captured in November 1950, he died in the Pyoktong prison camp on May 23, 1951, after months of caring for fellow prisoners. His remains were identified in 2021 and laid in the cathedral that September.

Good to know before you go: most pilgrims also go to his home parish, St. John Nepomucene in Pilsen, where the Guild lists visiting on Thursday and Friday in the afternoon and on Saturday in the morning, with other times by appointment; groups of ten or more are asked to send the request form a week or more ahead. Pope Francis authorized the decree recognizing his offering of life on February 24, 2025, and a miracle attributed to his intercession is still needed for beatification. Until then, prayer for his intercession is private devotion.
