The Vilnius painting was first shown publicly at the Gate of Dawn on the Sunday after Easter in 1935 and hung in St. Michael's Church from 1937. After that church was closed under Soviet rule the canvas was rescued, kept for a time in a church in what is now Belarus, and later returned to Vilnius; it was restored in the early 2000s and placed in the present shrine in 2005. Sources differ on the exact year it was painted, within 1934 and 1935.

A third well-known version, by the American painter Robert Skemp, was completed in 1982. All are images for the same devotion; no one version is required.
